run a 6x1 across the bottom (kickboard/gravel board) get that level and the slats sit tidy on that and easier to keep level. then you won't have to string line and chop the top! other than that tidy job!

Take a circular saw along the bottom and replace the gap with a gravel board. Battens wont rot then

Id cut the top of the slats that’s a lot above the top rail, it will warp bud id recommend 100mm above top rail and 100mm below the bottom

you can hide the uneven top line by running a board horizontally across the top as a fancy edge to dress it up on both sides and make it look level😉
