One of my favourite things about keeping chickens is just how different they all are. We keep quite a few different chicken breeds here, from tiny bantams and Silkies to Polish and some of our bigger breeds, and keeping such a mixed flock has definitely taught me a few things. Chicken breeds do have certain traits, but honestly, the individual personalities can completely surprise you. Some breeds are definitely hardier than others too, especially when you’re keeping chickens somewhere that gets plenty of wet, windy weather! Then there are the things you don’t necessarily think about when choosing a chicken breed. Crests can affect their vision, feathered feet need a bit more checking in muddy conditions and all that lovely fluff can sometimes make it harder to spot problems. And bantams might be smaller, eat less and need less space, but that definitely doesn’t automatically make them easier. They can fit through gaps you didn’t even know existed! For me, choosing chicken breeds is about much more than how they look. I think about temperament, hardiness, egg laying and how they’ll fit into the flock and the way we keep chickens here. Although I’m still very easily distracted by a gorgeous chicken. 😂 I genuinely don’t think there’s one best chicken breed for everyone. That’s actually part of what I love about keeping a mixed flock — they all bring something completely different. What chicken breed would you choose every single time? #chickenkeeping #backyardchickens #raisingchickens #chickenlover #chickensoftiktok
