@margrethe.ii: For Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, the death of King Harald V of Norway is not only the loss of a colleague, but also the loss of a close family member and friend. Queen Margrethe and King Harald have known each other since they were both small children. They were both great-grandchildren of King Frederik VIII of Denmark, making them second cousins. Their childhoods were very different during the years of the war, but as there were only three years between them, they soon got to know each other better through royal events and family gatherings. Their friendship grew even closer when King Harald married Queen Sonja. Queen Margrethe and Queen Sonja became friends almost instantly. Queen Margrethe has later said that it was through Queen Sonja that she also became a closer friend of King Harald. It is well known that Queen Margrethe loves Norway and has visited the country frequently throughout her life. Her passion for nature and skiing is something she has been able to share with her Norwegian friends. I am sure Her Majesty will miss King Harald dearly. Queen Margrethe and King Harald also shared a love of humour. At King Harald’s 80th birthday in 2017, Her Majesty said: “Harald, year after year, you have shown more of that humor and sense of occasion that are so characteristic of you: A quick answer that hits the mark, a laugh that comes from the heart – few can laugh like you, and few can make others laugh along with you.” Queen Margrethe has lost not only a family member, but one of her closest friends.
