The Great Train Robber Who Ran For 36 Years In the early hours of August 8th, 1963, fifteen men stopped a Royal Mail train in Buckinghamshire and pulled off what became known as the Great Train Robbery. The gang had discovered that trains from Glasgow carried used banknotes on their way to be destroyed, and that the haul would be enormous after a bank holiday weekend. They rigged a signal to show red using a glove over the green lens and a battery wired to the red bulb, forcing the train to halt at a quiet spot. The driver, Jack Mills, was struck during the raid and never fully recovered. The gang took 120 mailbags containing around 2.6 million pounds, the equivalent of roughly 50 million today, and disappeared to a nearby farmhouse. That farmhouse was their undoing. Police found fingerprints there, and most of the gang were arrested within months and given sentences of up to thirty years. Ronnie Biggs, a minor member of the gang, served fifteen months before escaping Wandsworth prison in 1965 by climbing the wall with a rope ladder and dropping into a waiting van. He fled to Australia, then Brazil, undergoing plastic surgery along the way, and lived openly for decades while extradition attempts repeatedly failed. In 2001, ill and nearly broke, he voluntarily flew back to Britain. 🔗 ALL OUR LINKS linktr.ee/hiddenhistoryofficial 📲 FOLLOW HIDDEN HISTORY YouTube: @history.hiddenofficial Instagram: @historyhidden.official Facebook: @hiddenhistory Threads: @historyhidden.official #hiddenhistory #ronniebiggs #darkhistory #greattrainrobbery #1963
