I would say that as a beginner, the most important thing to start thinking about comics as a medium, not a genre. That way of thinking is why most people only associate western comics as Marvel and DC, but there is a much larger pool of great creative works to check out. If you are interested in horror, consider checking out Dark Horse's Harrow County by Cullen Bunn or Image's The Deviant by James Tynion. Really, any book by Jame Tynion is a great place to start reading comics, as his work usually has great writing and realistic dialogue. If you're big on superheroes, check out works like Tin Can Society/Invincible/Midlife Crisis/Capes: all at Image Comics. Good luck jumping in!!!

I would pick up some graphic novel collections. The new 52 superman run I thought was really good.

Welcome to the world of comicbooks. Here are my favorite characters Daredevil, Adam Warlock, Moon Knight, Avengers, Silver Surfer, Iron Fist, Dr Stange, Inhumans, Vamperilla. I would recommend buying Marvel Origins, Son of Origins, Bring on the bad guys and read them. Then read conpendums of character runs, unless you want to start collecting physical copies, which can get expensive if you want the older issues. Horror, you can't go wrong with Creepy and Eerie magazines. Graphic novels I have read and enjoyed, The Beast is Dead (get the English version, it's French and was the first graphic novel ever written), Maus 1 & 2, The Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Locke & Key, The Walking Dead. Heavy Metal magazine also has some great comic runs.

chris claremonts xmen run is the best but it’s a bit older so it may not be something you’ll want to jump straight into, house of x powers of x is a good modern starting point. superman for all seasons is a go to origin story but do not read all star superman as your first superman comic. as for the horror side there are a lot of cool indie runs that work well like something is killing the children, exquisite corpses, bitter root. as for my own recommendations, read any daniel warren johnson like his transformers run, extremity, do a powerbomb, beta ray bill etc. the current batman superman worlds finest is a great blend of the two characters with how they became partners. mister miracle is an amazing solo run, alan moores work is incredible and i am a watchmen glazer, as well as v for vendetta, swamp thing and top 10. grant morrison, geoff johns, jonathan hickman, john byrne, dan jurgens and jeff lemire have incredible portfolios of work but id recommend downloading an app like comic geeks to see the general consensus on a run before committing to and buying something as some writers have greats peaks but some stinkers mixed in. i’d also lastly recommend finding an artist or style you like and going from there as a lot of the time when i’m reading something i find myself not liking the art and then not being so keen on the book itself. anyway i hope u enjoy the journey of comics!!

Read Watchmen. You can get them all in one book. Though it might spoil other comics for you.

Another guy said it already but Sandman is not tooo long, you do not need to worry about issues since there is a compilation and it does an amazing job with the story telling

I personally love the Batman as vampire comics. Sadly I lent mine to an ex-friend and he never returned them.
