Nope. The character could have been dark skinned and still had proximity to whiteness. Think Clarence Thomas. This is classic Hollywood colorism.

interesting take. I was actually more impressed with how they decided to show the mother was the root of the plan and not the father, as they presented it in the episodes previous.

I disagree that the mother was Evil. 🤷🏽♀️Many cultures “train” their kids from a young age to become doctors, lawyers etc. Why not a Green Lantern.

big reach here ngl, same exact message could have the same effectiveness with an actual dark skinned black man. It’s not only light skins who deal with “you act white” as a dark skin myself I’ve experienced this countless times in my life. Nothing wrong with aaron but we don’t have to try and defend hollywood here.

I can appreciate this thought (even if I disagree). The scenes with the brothers def made it seem like the light skinned brother was preferred and had proximity closer to whiteness. And it runs true that darker skinned people still have to work even harder. I know my preference was to see a dark skinned John Stewart to drive home that colorism plays into how dire the consequences become the darker we are. So in the context of this episode (I’m with you), but the overall casting I was still slightly disappointed. He’s amazing in the role and essence of John Stewart tho.

episode three did SUCH a good job involving the black experience. where a bunch of media likes to slip in a singular moment or mention of racial tension, lanterns produced an ENTIRE episode dedicated to the complex dynamics and issues that racism creates. I WAS MOVED!

Ngl I don’t see why him being lightskin verifies your theory and makes it more interesting for the story. The same could be true with a darkskin guy. his brothers teasing him about being white has nothing to do with his skin but his behaviour and we know plenty of dark skin black men in school who were acting “white” picking Aaron Pierre I like him as an actor but im kinda disappointed we didn’t get the original darkskin character knowing that same narrative you’re talking about could have just as easily worked. The thing is AP is so Freaking good in this that it’s now impossible to see anyone else be John steward 😭
