@denturedame: Question for Dentists - Why do some dentists feel strongly about tooth loss and substance use, while others understand that's not always the case and shouldn't be assumed? Why do you think this happens? 🦷 #Dentist #Toothless #Dental #Dentures #denturesatayoungage
I’m an assistant now but at one point I was an add!ct for 8 years and my dentist says she wished she had my teeth because they are perfect. She has no idea the life I used to live. There is so many factors of oral health.

Mine is just being broke and not able to fix my teeth when they were smaller cavities. Then I got them fixed and the root canals failed, so I got those teeth pulled and replaced with implants. I only have 6 implants/8 teeth replaced.

I’ve never heard a dentist say that. Every dentist I’ve ever met say gum disease.

I’m not a dentist, but for my teeth it’s 100% genetics..when both sides of my family ( not drug users) all have dentures and teeth problems…

4 years of DV, 2 pregnancy’s and a huge fear of the dentist, never did drugs. I hate that people jump to that conclusion.

Probably during schooling. I was in a program in healthcare in 2005 and the teacher was saying how problematic female patients get labeled as having fibromyalgia even if they don’t.

I had a dentist fight me that it could only be caused by drugs. He didn’t like my response of a broken jaw (had teeth knocked out), 15 years with an eating disorder, and lack of money caused my issues. Thankfully my new dentist is so kind and never judged me. He was just glad I was healthy now and had the resources to get help.

6 years of cancer treatment took mine. and I hate that assumption as someone who have never once done illicit drugs. I get my finals next month and I cannot wait!

i feel its just a preset notion that it always has to be the only reason. its wild when you have many people including myself that drugs had nothing to do about their tooth loss. some people just have plain genetics going against them like with gum disease. also, heres a wonderful idea while we are on the subject of dental care. maybe make it more attainable for people to get dental care. why does it have to be so expensive to get implants. the problem is for a lot of people is it is so expensive and isnt covered by most insurances people can't afford implants. dentures is the only option for many. dentists shouldn't be judgemental anyways as a healthcare provider. you can have opinions fine, but don't let that hinder how you care for people. regardless of how they loss their teeth, their money spends like anyones. they are paying customers so what is the issue.

High dose steroids to keep me alive is what caused mine- that and lack of dental insurance for regular care.

My original dentist automatically assumed that my bad teeth was due to substance abuse. My tooth loss was due to health issues but he didn’t seem to understand that 🙄

My rheumatologist would not approve my extractions until he spoke to my dentist and they made a plan since I had to come off several medications. If they thought that at the dentist office 1. thankfully they never made me feel that way and 2. my rheumatologist, cardiologist, and PCP definitely made sure they knew that wasn't the case.

Yeah, my fault has been in the business of making dentures for over 50 years. It’s a very small percentage of our patients.

I never did substances. I got pregnant and had morning sickness for 6 months straight. it wore my teeth. then my second kid finished them off. Im always offended because they look at me like I lie. I NEVER did substances. Now even if I still had them, due to chemo they would be gone anyway.

I was raised hyper religious and we didn’t go to the Dr or dentist. I didn’t see a dentist until I was 19. Add on lactose intolerance with no calcium or D replacement as an until 22. I just got all on x done 3 weeks ago today, but have been sure people wondered about substance use over the years. Im a 20yr icu nurse and know better than to judge. Tons of reasons for tooth loss.
