In the Habanera, love is a bird: you think you've caught it, and it flaps its wings and vanishes, showing up when nobody called. If someone gets loved by her, they'd better watch out — it's not an invitation, it's a warning. Bizet wrote that warning for mezzo-soprano. It's the lower of the two main female voice types in opera, built to carry a threat without pushing the high notes. The voice singing it here is a soprano: Tamara Radjenović, British-Montenegrin, trained at the Royal College of Music. The easy way out exists: raise the piece a tone or two. That's usually what happens when a soprano takes on Carmen. She doesn't. She sings the Habanera in the exact key Bizet wrote, without dropping a single note: the verse in D minor, the refrain in D major — the original vocal ground, untouched. That's where the soprano on the poster becomes something else: a voice choosing to stand on ground that isn't hers, with no transposition to soften the landing. Even Bizet wasn't sure of what he had in his hands. He thought this melody was a folk tune — only later learning it belonged to Spanish composer Sebastián Yradier, and he corrected the score with a credit note on the spot.
