It’s not that I don’t want my kid to come home, I want him to experience life beyond my house. His roommate went home every single weekend and ended up dropping out the second semester.

I started going to summer camp for a week by myself at like 10 (no phones allowed so it was almost no contact). My mom also dropped me off in Boston for 2 weeks for a pre college program. Best things she ever did.

I Think a lot of parents have lost themselves in being parents. It’s okay for everyone to grow and discover and rediscover themselves

Mine has no resilience 😭. I won’t let her come home and now she’s telling me her mental health is bad. That can be true, but she’s always pulling that card the second things get hard. She just told me she hates me and “don’t play mother of the year when I’m dead”. I haven’t talked to her in 3 days because she hurt my heart so bad and I’m so tired.

You are absolutely right! You are teaching your kid to be independent and grow through discomfort.

Yes! This!
I do not want her to come home, she needs to figure it out and we have a great relationship! These parents need to let them go.

If my kid had to come home I’d feel like a failure in preparing them. You can still 100% support then and they can stay at school.

My parents pushed me and my brother and we still loved them 😂 we still wanted to come home for the holidays and had a good adult child relationship with them. They were a listening ear over the phone when I needed it but they weren’t telling me to move back home.

My parents would literally be like “no you’re not coming home. Stay, study, have fun.” *hang up the phone.*

I told my kids you have to give it year. Coming home wasn’t much of an option- too far. I want my kids to be independent and successful.

I would go and spend a weekend to check in before I would let them come home. They have to spend real time there.

My daughter fought with homesickness, hard. I encouraged her to power through and she graduated summa cum laude and will have her masters this spring.

I wish my parents would of forced me to stay my first YEAR at college! I needed to grow up and start being independent. I felt it stunted me. I love my parents and we have a great relationship to this day

I don't have children, but the best thing my mom could do when I went to college 8 hours away was tell me was "You made the commitment to a school that far away, you can always call me to talk about what you need to, but I can't come get you until Thanksgiving. You are an adult now." And I'm so glad she did, because I could afford to go back after that first year and that broke me!

I don’t want him to come home because I remember that first semester of college and the freedom and exploration and friendships and such and starting actual life and I don’t want any guilt felt like they need to come home. I’m an adult I can handle it

They need to learn resilience. When i left home for the first time it was lonely for awhile and you feel out of sorts, but you learn a new routine and start a new life. My oldest is currently doing visits and the only thing I'm warning him about is that all but one of his school interests are clear across the country and I told him there will be no way to just pop home on a long weekend. His one closer choice is still 7 hours away by car, but still much more doable for a long weekend.

Yes. I went about 7 states away. Wasn’t able to come home until Thanksgiving. It was really important for me. I made life-long friends who still show up, even though I’ve moved back home since.
