It refers to behavior that persists across generations, while the reason the behavior existed in the first place has become a ghost that most people don't even believe in. But it was there, and it influences us. The concept originated in the work of psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok during the 1960s and 1970s. They developed the idea of the transgenerational phantom after encountering people whose symptoms seemed connected not to their own experiences, but to secrets, shame, crimes, or losses concealed by an earlier generation. Abraham described the phantom as the presence created by “the gaps left in us by the secrets of others.” Their work was published in English in The Shell and the Kernel. This is the most meaningful thing I have heard to date about racism. Thank you. I adopted biracial children and they often do not notice the racism they encounter but I do. As a white person I am terrified for them to enter the world on their own. The world will see them as black and far too many will react to them as black. They may not have the skills to navigate the world as black adults because I can't teach them what that really truly entails...white people be better!
