@teslamotors.hu: GOOD NEWS 🚖 The future is getting very real in downtown Austin now, with multiple Tesla Cybercabs caught on video shuttling employees around and handling pickup and drop-off operations in everyday city traffic—no closed courses or carefully controlled environments here 🔥 The most interesting part? The curbside interactions. One Cybercab pulls up next to a line of parked commercial trucks and traffic cones, navigating a tight, less-than-ideal loading zone. Instead of swinging out into the traffic lane, its large passenger door opens upward toward the curb. While the passenger door is still raised, the rear hatch opens, giving us a great real-world look at passengers getting in or out while simultaneously loading the trunk. Employees navigate the tight squeeze between the Cybercab, the cones, and the parked vans. Even though the camera angle slightly hides the luggage, you can clearly see the massive rear hatch and the curb-facing door operating at the same time. A second sequence offers an even better view of the passenger experience—and shows how multiple Cybercabs operate in tandem. Two of the cars form a short queue, with the trailing vehicle smoothly mimicking the lead car’s stops and starts. When the lead car pulls over, its door opens upward. Instead of someone getting out, a guy in a red cap walks out from between the parked trucks, approaches the open door, leans in to chat or check the cabin, and steps back onto the curb. Once he’s clear, the door closes, and the Cybercab waits a beat before taking off. From a safety standpoint, these are incredibly valuable scenarios. The vehicles are dealing with parked trucks, restricted curb access, cones, passing cars, pedestrians, scooters, a city bus, cross-traffic, and an active intersection. Plus, the footage was shot around dusk on a slick, reflective road, adding another layer of complexity for the cars' vision and perception systems. The butterfly doors are especially interesting in this setting. They create a wide opening without swinging out into moving traffic, though passengers still have to squeeze through a narrow curbside gap. Even with the limited space, the raised door and rear hatch easily clear the nearby vans and cones. Once the curbside interactions are done, the doors and hatch close completely flush before the cars even budge. They wait for the employees to clear the area, pull away one by one, and merge back into traffic. As they roll up to an active intersection under a "Guadalupe" street sign—firming up the downtown Austin location—the lead Cybercab smoothly slows down and yields perfectly to crossing pedestrians and a black Chevy truck turning across its lane. The video also gives us a closer look at the Cybercab’s street-ready design: the low gold body, expansive glass, aero wheel covers, full-width front and rear light bars, massive rear liftgate, and Texas manufacturer plates. Notably, there are zero conventional side mirrors or bulky roof-mounted sensor pods visible from these angles. Ultimately, autonomy is about way more than just getting from Point A to Point B. A truly useful robotaxi has to figure out where to stop, protect the passenger side, manage doors and trunk access, wait for people to get out of the way, and safely merge back into traffic—all while handling busy city intersections like a pro.
