I was known as a
I was known as a "garbage disposal" (affectionately) because of how much I ate as a youngster. I went through so much food before any thoughts of disordered eating ever crossed my mind, but I never gained any weight. for a period of time in elementary school, I looked unhealthily skinny even though I ate so much. my food consumption all turned into height instead of weight. I had a very rapid growth spurt that left me with a lot of back pain, perpetual shin splints, and I was at least a head taller than all of my peers. when I was 9, the boy sitting next to me in class looked down, saw my thighs flat against my chair as I was wearing shorts, and said, "yeaaaah... I wouldn't wear shorts anymore if I were you." this was when I looked anorexic, but two years before I actually developed that disorder. then at age 11, I had my first period. I was still so skinny, but it was like something hit me. "whelp, I'm a woman now, time to pluck my eyebrows to bits and worry about my breast to belly ratio." (both were completely flat, and my eyebrows have never recovered.) I remember the first time I admitted to myself that I may have an eating disorder. I was 16 and helping my mom put away groceries. it was Friday, and knowing cinnamon rolls are my favourite, she surprised us by getting a box of four cinnamon rolls for our family and a friend of mine to enjoy over the weekend. she then went in her room to change and I followed her, very angry. I accused her of buying the cinnamon rolls in an attempt to make me "even fatter" and "more disgusting." she looked totally bewildered and said she truly didn't know what I was trying about. it was the sadness in her eyes and voice that made me realize something was wrong with me. I could tell she was not expecting her nice surprise to be taken so poorly and she was mad at herself for upsetting me. I felt horrible and I tried to make that clear. I hope I was able to. whatever our differences may be, no one deserves to be mistreated for showing kindness to another, especially when it's in the form of a surprise pastry. 🤤 a similar event with cookies happened at a later date, but it involved my boyfriend - who knew I was anorexic and with his past manipulations, I believe in this case it was a malicious act, unlike my mom's kind surprise. either way, I didn't feel as bad this time, because I ended up getting slapped and bank handed several times. when I was a homeless addict I got down to 80lbs unintentionally. I was dying from malnourishment. when I got sober, I started eating as much as I could without getting sick. I remember we were all very happy when I finally got to 100lbs. but then I couldn't stop eating. so I went from the super quick metabolism of childhood, the disordered eating of my teens, the homelessness of adulthood, to putting on weight for the first time in my life in my late 20s. it's been a hard thing for me to deal with, but I've gotten better at it in the last year. in 2022 and again in 2024 I was addicted to working out, so did 2+ hour workouts every day even when I had a sprained wrist, a sprained knee, sprained ribs, an alcohol relapse, and two very severe illnesses. now when I wake up and the first thing I do every morning is look in the mirror and say, "you're beautiful and I love you" even on the days when both of those things feel like lies. do I still have disordered eating habits? definitely. odds are, I always will, but I've gotten better at handling them. as with every mental illness, it is something I have to put work into battling every single day, but it's worth it. remember: if you are struggling with an eating disorder or any other mental health issue, you are not alone and recovery, though a very hard, often scary battle, is more possible than you think. ❤️‍🩹 plz check the link in my bio to help me afford lots of cinnamon rolls. 😎 #addiction #MentalHealth #recovery #motivation #fyp
