I've made friends at local tech college classes, local recreational learning classes, intermural sports teams (the non competitive ones for me), walking my dog, volunteering places I have an interest in (cleaning up my local beach, habitat for humanity), I took the friends from the local learning class and co-founded a crochet club that meets at a local bar and brings in new members whenever people ask what we are doing... I'm sure there's more but that's what I can think of right now for ideas

Also just like, be friendly and nice at places you frequent. I made a friend on vacation once because we loved each other’s purses and ended up getting coffee. I’ve also done this by talking about books at a book store with the person behind the counter. Just be open to getting to know people

as an autistic person who's been very depressed in his adult years because I just can't seem to grasp how people socialise this is extremely helpful thank you so much

what's a good place to visit regularly? restaurant? grocery store? my knees aren't functional enough for the gym, and my local game stores only play magic the gathering....

YES being social is a SKILL, thank you !
another tip: your guts are mean, your guts are lazy and wanna stay home 'cause they're scared : GO TO THE THING, FUCK THE GUTS. Stop canceling shit 'cause you're tired or don't feel like going, GO. Show up even for only 1h, GO. AND BRING A LITTLE SNACK. If you always cancel and never is there for the village the village will stop inviting you, GO (and yes, I have autism, it costs me spoons, if I'm exhausted to the point of non verbal I'm messaging politely to apologize about canceling but otherwise I manage my spoons and I GO)

People in the comments are talking about coffee shops or restaurants, but the real gold is hobby groups. Its hard to make a genuine connection with someone paid to be nice to you. However if you have a hobby (reading, crafting, board games, dnd, gardening, politics, etc) find a local group and start attending regularly. its MUCH easier make friends with people you already have something in comments with.

for me it ends at the last step - we hang out once and never again, like they're not interested in anything more

It’s really hard to find people when you’re mentally behind due to trauma and the things you enjoy everyone is mentally your age but actually younger than you and all people seem to care about is something my brain can’t brain as

ALSO you’re going to have to keep doing it. People might not be interested in being outside friends or you might not click. You have to keep trying

I gotta get over this whole thing of wanting friends that put in all the effort. Im so flaky and withdrawn it's starting to make me as mad as the people I do it to.

coworker: what’re you doing after work?
me: going straight home. you?
coworker: i’m going to ulta
me: wanna go together?
coworker: yeah
and that’s how we became friends that hangout regularly. i’ve realized the “what’re you doing after this?” method is unpatched and works in every scenario

Shared group activities/interests are great. I'm actually super bad at starting conversations, but I'm really good at public speaking, so I rely on performing really well on stage and then being friendly when people then approach me. It's a little embarrassing, but I still get nervous approaching people, and I suspect it makes me come across as an aloof weirdo. 😬 I'm actually a very friendly weirdo! 😅

I speak from experience that you also have to get over “not texting first” and letting resentment build up. Friendships take work and you have to put in effort when you don’t feel like it. People don’t just “come” to you.

Yep, genuinely accurate, go somewhere regularly, talk to people, invite them to do other stuff, boom new friends
