the episode was told in the perspective of John's parents,they believe that Hal became green lantern because he didn't have to go through some of the things that they go through,It didn't say anything about Hal getting the ring because he's white

I just like how they tried to make the viewers think the ring made a decision based on race and that it wasn’t fair to the dad when a literal squirrel and a whole planet are members of the corp. they just need to accept that John sr was a bitch and Hal was a goat. Nothing wrong with that

The point of the episode was it was easier for how Jordan to become a Green Lantern because being a white man in America he had less to fear on an everyday basis. He didn’t have to face discrimination just regular tribulations that come with life.
