Twenty years ago, at the Port of Hamburg, we used to go up the container crane to the sixth tier without a safety harness, unlock the twistlocks, and then work our way down tier by tier. I wouldn't do that today, either.

I have a friend. He has since retired. He was also a Crane Operator; he was driving (or I should say, operating) at night and his crane boss, who was also his father's partner in the hold back in the day, was offshore. And the Crane operator did not see the walking boss. The walking boss was trying to help him. Unsnag, a one high box from a frozen cone. when the box did become dislodged, it knocked the boss, who was one offshore, into the water and the boss died. That Crane operator was never the same because the boss was for all practical purposes his uncle, it was his father's partner in the hold. He knew this man his whole life. And this Crane operator although he is retired. He is still not the same since then.... this happened in the Port of Oakland.

ILA Local 1291 here. Never trust anything man made like that. All you need is for that cable to snap or that spreader to break. Steel is not indestructible. Ive have seen the craziest shit happen and people being hurt or killed. no job is ever worth more than your safety.

Manually or not it's unsafe. they actually tire a tagline to the lock to control it with the tag line that's what we do in my company....
