I think it is just who he is that makes her unable to see him himself and she has to rely on the things around him. Kind of like Alice with the wolves in Twilight they blocked her site too.

When Cassian and Azriel cross paths with Koschei at the end of ACOSF, he’s described as being shadowed and they can see the shame of a man but even infront of him they cannot see him, so maybe that’s why Elain can’t “see” him either
