When I was in college, I worked in IT for the math department. One day, a PROFESSOR, someone with a DOCTORATE, came to me in a panic saying his computer didn’t work. I went to his office just to push the power button. 🤦

“Blowing the dust off the plug and plugging it back in” was always a good way to ensure the plug ACTUALLY made it into a socket

I’m not an IT person but I used to sit next to the old lady in the office. One day she was freaking out bc her computer didn’t start. I was working so I tried not to get distracted. She must have called everyone over and they all stared at it like it was some kind of alien tech. After I finished what I was doing I looked over and saw that she kept turning the monitor on and off. I told her she needed to turn on the computer and she aggressively told me she has been doing that and pressed the button on the monitor again. I was like that’s not your computer that’s your monitor. She looked at me like I had 3 heads then proceeded to press the monitor button again. I tried not to roll my eyes and pointed at the tower directly UNDER the monitor and said that’s the computer. She still stared at it so I sighed and stood up and walked over and pressed the power button on the computer. It booted up. She was like omg thank you you’re a genius. I was like no….I’m really not.

3 years in IT. Like 75% of my job was walking to an office and either plugging back in or turning back on something the person SWORE over the phone was both plugged in and powered on.

literally the first lesson in my office management class was what to do it the computer won't turn on. 1. make sure its plugged in. 2. make sure its turned on. 3. make sure the monitor is turned on. 4. make sure monitor is connected to computer. 5. start process over. 6. call tech support. i was like are people really this stupid?? then I worked in retail for 20 years and realized they YES they are

I was once asked to troubleshoot a laptop that kept crashing. Turns out the battery was simply depleted. Even though it was plugged into the power strip. Which was itself plugged in. To itself. 🤦‍♀️

it should be required at job interviews to ask "if your computer is not turning on, what do you do?"

I had the same ticket. The issue - PiCNiC (problem in chair, not in computer)… they had 3 power strips plugged in a loop.

When I was 16 I was volunteering at the admin offices for my local school…. They said a printer wouldn’t work. I asked if it was plugged in. Everyone insisted yes. It was. To a power strip… that was plugged into itself….

many years ago I worked in Panasonic support. we started every troubleshooting session with can you unplug the cord from your machine and the walls. ok count to three then plug it back in starting with the machine first. aka we can't ask you if its plugged in because you would never get them to admit it wasn't plugged in otherwise

This is why users aren't allowed to select the impact on their own tickets 😂 literally everyone with a Word or Outlook issue would be raising P1s for themselves.

everyone always said "yes I have already restarted and turned it off and on" - so I would say that we have to do a hard restart trace it out and unplug it from the wall and wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. and you could usually hear on the other side when someone realized the plug was out lol
