@mordecaimuriisa: Yesterday, a 27-year-old People Power and Bobi Wine supporter, Paul Musoke, was laid to rest but his funeral left me with something I did not expect: hope. Paul had been attacked at his home, which was locked, barred and set ablaze. while he was hospitalized. Before his death, he told the NUP Secretary General that he suspected the attack was connected to the LC elections. But yesterday, as we mourned him, something powerful happened. I watched People Power foot soldiers carry Paul’s body to his final resting place, singing Tuliyambala Engule—and for a moment, the grief gave way to something much bigger. Hope. In a country where so many people have been broken, frightened, disillusioned and pushed into hopelessness, these young people somehow found the strength to sing. They did not sing because everything was fine. They sang in the middle of the pain. And that moved me. It took me back to the days of Bobi Wine’s campaigns, when millions of Ugandans gathered at rallies, singing songs of freedom, believing that another Uganda was possible. Yesterday, standing in the middle of that mourning crowd, I felt that spirit again. Paul’s body was being carried to the grave, but the people carrying him were sending a completely different message: You may bury one of us, but you cannot bury our hope. And perhaps that is what Tuliyambala Engule means at its deepest level—not that the struggle is over, but that we refuse to surrender our belief that Uganda can be better. Paul is gone. But yesterday, for a brief moment, his funeral reminded me that hope is still alive.
