Elizabeth Dunn, Lara Aknin and Michael Norton handed people either five dollars or twenty, and told half to spend it on themselves and half to spend it on someone else before the day was out. That evening, the people who had spent it on someone else were measurably happier. The amount made no difference at all. Five dollars given away beat twenty spent on yourself.
