@the.drillmaster: How the Honor Guard Defeats Ego Honor guard training should not inflate the ego. It should defeat it. Why? Because every part of the mission points away from self. The flag is not about you. The uniform is not about you. The rifle, the casket, the ceremony, the family, and the fallen are not about you. You may be visible, but you are not the focus. That is the lesson. Honor guard work places a person in a highly visible position, but the purpose is service, not attention. The trainee who understands that becomes stronger. The trainee who does not becomes arrogant. Real honor guard excellence requires humility. You train harder so the ceremony is cleaner. You move with precision so the meaning is protected. You stand still so others can grieve, remember, and honor. That is how the honor guard defeats ego. It teaches the member to disappear into the mission. Not because the member does not matter. But because the mission matters more.
