@njapoet: In Gary Soto's famous poem "Oranges," he refers to a young girl's face and says it was "bright with rouge," and my students always ask me what that means. It's an older word (ask your mom) that basically means blush, but I've always hated that in subsequent editions, the word rouge was replaced by the word "makeup," losing all consonance and the lovely sounds that came from the repetition of Rs. Anyway, just wanted to share that diction matters and sometimes choosing the right word is also based on the sound it makes-- and not just what it means. #consonance #poetry #englishteacher
