This take is totally stupid. John always took inspiration from different cultures around the world and maybe is not the correct way of inspiration right now but you simply can’t judge 20+ year old collections with today’s standards. John is one of the most important creators of the 21st century.

This is such a shallow TikTok take. You did not grow up with Galliano, you did not know the magic of Galliano. He was the pinnacle of camp and escapist glamour. It’s not “RACIST” to take storybook figures from other cultures (and your own!! He’s British! He did a lot of that!) and make them beautiful and desirable. His technique was unique and immediately recognisable, his through line was swashbuckling, pirate camp. His clothes, bags, shoes and vision set the precedent for all of the Y2K flutter tops, overworked leather pants, sloppy glamour bags and anything Bella Hadid-inspired you see right now. He’s the reason Pat McGrath is a global brand. Some of his stuff was dumb, and the rest was visionary. Let’s not think screaming racist caricature into a camera (while contouring one’s nose to European beauty standards) is convincing anyone that you know your stuff. Sorry.

he’s exquisite, his art is exquisite, and that’s that. i’m so sorry, but using this as an example of how he stereotypes and puts cultures in boxes, as if it wasn’t stunning, is just wildly misunderstanding his vision. the highly stylized cultural depictions in his work exist in a realm of theater, fantasy, and exaggeration, and by this same logic, he also portrayed european cultures inaccurately and hyperbolically. john galliano is not national geographic, he created a gorgeous world of fantasy. and while i understand that some of his depictions are tone-deaf and have not aged particularly well, as a fashion lover, you gotta understand that his art is worth defending. his hyperbolic takes on concepts weren’t limited to cultural identity, but also extended to gender and time periods as well lmfao.

His work at Margiela wasn’t like this though and the references to other cultures did not seem like a mockery of them, if you saw his interviews during that time he would take trips to those places and study the history. He would do countless research trips all over the world in a way that was definitely appreciative.

I think it’s kind of ridiculous to say that John Galliano can’t design without using racist caricatures, he’s had several runways that don’t use them. I don’t understand why we can’t simply criticize racism without rewriting history, nobody benefits, especially not the minorities we’re supposed to be fighting for

He was an alcoholic he got sober, educated himself also people don’t consider that this was a different time (probably because most of these opinions are coming from people who weren’t even born at the time lol) John gallanio is one of the most influential fashion designers in the entire world and I feel like he has paid dues and done the work it’s kind of heartbreaking because it shows that even if you are one of the greatest in the world and you put in the work to change we now live in a the kind of culture where you are still not deserving of a second chance. There is no excuse for what he said but in a culture where creativity feels like it’s dying I wish more people could separate that from the impact he has had on fashion no one has ever done it like John galliano.

My point isn’t that these cases are identical or that anyone should be excused for hateful behavior. It’s that the public and the fashion industry seem inconsistent in how they decide who deserves forgiveness and who doesn’t. John Galliano was rightly held accountable, but he also apologized, met with Jewish leaders, underwent education and has spent years trying to rebuild trust. Meanwhile, Karl Lagerfeld made repeated offensive remarks. Demna remained at Balenciaga after the 2022 campaign scandal, and Yayoi Kusama continued to receive major celebrations, including a global Louis Vuitton collaboration, even after racist writings from her past were widely known. So the question is, not equivalence. It’s: why do our standards for accountability and forgiveness shift so dramatically from person to person?
