advise from a mother craft nurse i met years ago ... dont allow them to fall asleep on the breast. different when they are new born. But at 18 mths he is using you to soothe himself, using you as a dummy. there is nothing wrong with breast feeding till well past 18mths... but if you feel its time for you and he can drink from a cup you could start weaning him off... its not easy but you could try waiting a few minutes before you go to him, allow him a chance to self soothe. if you go in dont offer the boob right away... and if you do offer the boob, keep him awake, dont allow him to fall asleep on the boob. put him down awake... its going to be hell for a little bit because he will fight you. they are master manipulators 🤣🤣... it will be you that will need to be the stronger one. but never feel pressured to give up

I can’t help with the breast feeding weaning, my girl weaned herself at 11 months. I work with kids who have communication problems, which lead to tantrums & frustration. Toddlers don’t have a lot of vocab to convey their feelings. You just need to be consistent. If you decide not to give him the boob, it will be hard no doubt. Bear in mind that the tantrums will escalate, because in the past, crying/screaming/throwing himself on the floor, results in getting the boob. Just try and stay calm (easier said than done) and talk gently with him ‘you’re so upset, do you want a cuddle with mummy, calm down’ something like that. It’s so hard to hear your kiddies crying, but if you hold space with them, at their level, perhaps stroking gently, it eventually passes. It will likely take up to 2 weeks for him to realise the tantrums aren’t resulting in getting the boob. Maybe he can select a sippy cup that he likes & you have that ready during the tantrums. Only you will know if you’re ready, but go gently. You’re a great mum 🩵

I ebf my daughter for over 3 years. The only advice I can give you is to remember you are worthy of choosing yourself in these decisions. Everybody’s journey looks different. You have done an amazing job all the way till now and if you decide to stop the initial period of adjustment is tough but you will both find new ways to coregulate - babies are so incredibly good at this because it’s natural - you will just know when you’re done. I was probably done at 2.5 years but weaning took a lot longer than I anticipated. Be gentle with yourself you will make the right decision when you’re ready 🤍

Im kind of in the same boat as you! My boy is 18 months & i have aways wanted to EBF till 2 yo. During the night he wakes anywhere from 2-10 times for boob. Its hard to get him back to sleep without it but sometimes ill just cuddle him and he cries for a bit & then finally falls asleep. BF is hard and takes such a toll on your body! My mum guilt is so bad i cant stop BF 🤣😭 My nipples are so fkn sore.
