The USSR’s space program only existed because it was racing the US, no rival, no program. And it wasn’t really about space, it was about building missiles that could hit America, Sputnik and Gagarin were byproducts of weapons development. That’s two superpowers throwing everything at one prestige goal, which any system can do. Meanwhile the same economy that built the rockets couldn’t stock a grocery store. Winning one showcase race isn’t proof the system works, it’s proof they prioritized rockets over their own people.

Let's talk about that. Sputnik was the first satellite launched into space. What did Sputnik do? It was a radio becon. When it passed overin space you could tune your shortwave radio to 100 mhz and hear a beeping sound. Meanwhile, 4 months later the US launched Pioneer 1, That satellite discovered the Van Allen radiation belts. But let's circle back for a moment. "That one time" That one time. Not that ten times, Or 50 times. That ONE time. A decade later The US was landing men on the moon. 40 years later the Soviet Union would implode under the weight of its excess.
