I grew up being told that my great-grandmother was part Cherokee and her tribe was “black Dutch”. It wasn’t until college that an anthropology professor told me there was no such tribe and that her “tribe” was actually a slur for Melungeon.

I grew up on Clinch River upriver from Kyles Ford. This is a picture of my Papaw and Uncles in the 70’s. Bonus points if you know what they are preparing to do. 😁 I have other pictures from that day but non-subsistence farmers wouldn’t like them.

My mom always said that my great great grandmother was Cherokee. I did an ancestry dna test and there were no native American in my ancestry. But, I do have many Melungeon cousins.
