I'm so happy for him! Volkswagens before 2000 are so straightforward for repairs. This is going to be a fun project.

My husband bought a 71 GMC shortbed, hoping my 11-year-old son would be interested in working on it with him. He has absolutely no interest, but I wanted to learn so he taught me instead. I’ve replaced the distributor, starter, carburetor, headlights and a bunch of other things I don’t know the name of, but it’s a blast! It only caught on fire once, and I forgot to put it in neutral when I started it one time and almost ran over my husband, and ran into our metal gate instead, but otherwise it’s been great. 😂

Mike that bought the ranch (with his sister Melissa) was my realtor when I bought my house a few years ago.

You’re an amazing dad. I’m so jealous for my kids that they didn’t have you… And I didn’t have one of you when I was a kid. I wish you and Finley a long and happy life together working on cars!

I learned how to be a mechanic from watching YouTube videos and wrenching on my cars, and friend’s and family’s cars. I even worked in a diesel shop for 4 years before my boss retired and sold the shop. You tell him anything is possible! Just watch a bunch of videos and pay really close attention. And a really good habit to practice is to get a bunch of magnetic trays and keep all your bolts separated when you’re taking things apart. You have no idea how many times I’ve sat there with a pile of bolts that all look almost exactly the same, and having to bottom them out in bolt holes to figure out which ones fit where. Keep them separated. You can label them too if you’re really fancy like me, but a lot of people don’t like to waste that extra time.
