She keeps believing that her mother will come back. She waits. She talks about her. She looks for signs that she is still somewhere. But then comes one of the most painful moments. Ponette is playing with the other children, and in the middle of their conversation, someone tells her that her mother deserved to d*e. Imagine being four years old. You’ve already lost the person you feel safest with, and another child says something so cruel about the person you’re desperately waiting to come back. And what makes the scene even more painful is that children don’t always understand the weight of their words. To an adult, saying “your mother deserved to d*e” is horrifying. But to a child who doesn’t completely understand death, grief, or the permanence of loss, it can simply be something they heard, something they believe, or even something they say because they want to hurt another child.
