@historybyhumans: Nic and Trees Elderhorst, both 91, had been married for 65 years when they chose to undergo euthanasia together in the Netherlands in 2017. Nic’s health had declined after a stroke in 2012 that severely reduced his mobility, while Trees was experiencing worsening mobility and memory problems. Their family said the couple feared being separated, with Trees potentially needing to enter a nursing home if her husband died first. Their daughters said that dying together was their deepest wish. The decision was not immediate. The couple discussed their wishes and went through an assessment process lasting about a year, while a geriatrician determined that Trees was still mentally competent to make the decision. Under Dutch law, euthanasia requires a voluntary and well-considered request and unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement, among other safeguards. Having two members of a couple qualify at the same time is unusual, so joint euthanasia cases are rare. The Netherlands became the first country to legalize euthanasia in 2002. By 2015, euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide accounted for about 4.5% of deaths in the country, up from 1.7% in 1990, before legalization. The Elderhorsts died surrounded by family. Their daughters later said the couple gave each other a kiss and died holding hands, according to their wishes.

This isn’t legal in the US bc they would lose money on all the medication that they prescribe for terminal patients.

If they were my parents, I’d feel so much pride/love. Imagine being born from a love like that?

As a nurse for over a decade, it's insane to me that we don't allow humane euthanasia. Seeing elderly people alone with families abandoning them, and literally rotting while their systems fail... Is pure torture. It's suffering. Allow people to decide when they want to go.

This is one of many reasons I believe in a “right to die” above a certain age.

Pro choice, pro medical euthanasia, pro people doing what they want with their bodies 🤍 cause why would I ever want to force anyone to do anything they don’t want to?

Everyone is such a big proponent on Euthanasia when it comes to pets, not wanting our animals to suffer unnecessarily, but when it comes to humans, they don’t extend the same compassion. It doesn’t make sense to me

At 91 with 60 plus years together grown children and grandchildren. They’ve seen it all and done it all. Life well lived. Get ya rest.

If you’ve ever sat by someone as they died from a horrible disease, you absolutely see why humane euthanasia is necessary

We were born into this world without our consent and somehow we're not allowed to own our lives. They lived a full life together and seen everything and loved each other enough. Let them do as they wish.

Euthanasia while it can seem scary, is not painful, it is a relaxing sleep. It is the way almost any human would want to leave this earth. Death like life is completely natural and no one should have to suffer through it.

My grandparents both just passed within 30 hours. They were happily married for 71 years. When my grandmothers condition worsened my grandfather refused his cancer treatment and entered hospice with her. They died holding hands… I love and miss them but if that’s not a story
