The first billion dollar one-person company is being built right NOW and I’m putting my name in the hat. Back in 2009, I was sitting across the table from a bschool alumna in the Netflix cafeteria. It was the middle of the financial crisis and I had no job offers. It was spring. The cafeteria was in Los Altos and the office was so small that during our conversation, Reid Hoffman came to the adjoining kitchenette twice, rummaging in the fridge and making himself coffee. He could definitely overhear our conversation. I remember this alumna taking out her iPhone (it was just the first or maybe the second generation) and showing me some of the app icons on her home screen: “These things”, she said, “I don’t know if they’re applets or apps or what they are. I just know that they are the future.” She also added: “You’re late to join Netflix as a generalist.
