The Hollister City Council unanimously voted in a closed session to rescind the layoffs of 35 city workers, reversing a decision made earlier this month by the city’s now-former city manager. The decision followed pleas from city union workers, who expressed concerns about the layoffs. Cheers erupted as the council announced its decision. "I think they heard the public and the employee saying that, you know, it's not really okay to base layoff decisions on faulty or deficient accounting," Bo Leland, with the Hollister Police Officers Association, said. "All the employees of the city of Hollister are going to breathe a little easier tonight." Despite reinstating jobs and firing the city manager, Hollister’s financial crisis remains unresolved. Leland highlighted the need for collaboration with city leaders to address the deficit. "Once we've understood what the deficit is, we need to understand what percentage of that deficit they're looking to realize in police union savings," Leland said. "And once we've identified that, we need to figure out from our membership what is acceptable and what's not acceptable in terms of, you know, concessions and furloughs and other cuts that we might have to make." While layoffs are off the table for now, city officials acknowledged that financial changes are necessary to prevent future job cuts. Hollister will now hold weekly budget meetings every Monday to reassess its financial situation. If major savings cannot be found, layoffs may be reconsidered.
