💯 Agree. I remember Wizard of Oz once a year in my house was big. Us three kids, sleeping bags, and my parents would get a pizza or ice cream maybe big macs from McDonald's. We NEVER had fast food. Got to stay up late. That was so special. Now it's Disneyland for thousands.🥰

I treat myself, but nothing that costs money. This weekend, I treated myself to time to knit. I don’t have extra cash to spend a lot of cash for treats.

We had no fast food restaurants within an hour of us growing up...treat!
No dessert with every meal.....treat!
Presents on birthday or Christmas...treat!

I had this conversation with my grandson the other day. They think every time you leave the house, you get a treat. I explained treats are for special occasions or else it’s not a treat. It’s just the norm. But it’s the current consumeristic culture. 100%.

Relate this topic to how too many seem to be unable to budget. At all. Everything everyday blows the budget.

We go out to dinner 5 times a year as a treat. There are 5 ppl in my house, on your birthday you pick what restaurant we go to. It is truly a treat because its so infrequent it feels special and my (adult) kids will take weeks to pick where we are going.

If we got 1 or 2 presents at Christmas we were thrilled because we didn’t get things ALL THE TIME! It was special.

I treat my kids randomly with gestures, cooking their favorite meal, doing their laundry, odds buying them a drink at the grocery store. They are all working young adults. They really appreciate the laundry being done because that gives them time to do other things 😊

A Coke was a treat, a nickel to buy a small bag of penny candy was a treat. I have had a great life, but nothing really excites me, anymore. There are so many things in the world, now! Too many choices!

While I agree with you, I also think we’re so incredibly stretched/burdened nowadays. Growing up my family had a complete support system to help them. They worked 8-5, because the always plugged in work culture wasn’t around where now it’s the expectation. We’re looking for some joy in w world of stress, which adds to financial stress. 🥺

I’m 60 and a treat was having a friend over and going to Tastee Freeze for a hamburger and a shake! Now people go thru a drive though on the daily so it’s not special. We also only got gifts on birthdays and at Christmas and even then it was pretty minimalistic compared to what kids get AND EXPECT in some regards, today. I was happy to get a new set of pajamas, some fruit in a shoebox, decorating the tree, spending time with family, watching a movie, etc. The regular days were just that. No one rewarded themselves for surviving! Lol

It’s easy to treat ourselves and children especially as we do better financially. Guilty🙋♀️. Our kids are good kids even though they have been given most things they want but it has taken the excitement out of things. So we have been working to reverse it.
