My kids had chores at home but more than that, I own a small business. My kids started doing inventory in my warehouse with me and my staff at 10 years old. If my kids wanted something that was expensive and out of the norm, i would tell them, that’s worth 10 hours of work… they would come and pack boxes, check in stock, put product away… then we would go get the item. Both of my very successful adult children, say that the work ethic they were given because of this has been equal if not more important than anything they learned in college or grad school.

I didn’t do great at this. I would rather get a root canal than manage another person, especially kids. I could do step 1 assign the task, all the follow up after that was pure agony.

My kids (16 and 15) get a weekly stipend and they have to budget their clothes, gas, car insurance, snacks, etc. Even dental work because the youngest doesn’t always take good care of her teeth. She does now that she’s paying for it. They’ve discovered they don’t actually need a new dress for every event.
