Speaking as a flight attendant, it’s because when they are extended, it takes up extra space in the bins (bins are designed to hold 4/5 suitcases and when they are extended, they might only hold 3/4). It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but if there are a ton of bags like that, then you really run out of space quickly. If it’s an older plane, it won’t fit in the bins and I’ve actually had the bins break from extended luggage (at that point, the bin cannot be used at all, for multiple flights). I blame luggage companies for even offering extendable luggage because this is a frequent issue.

I bought a cover for my away carry on that way they can’t see if my extender is open 😂 I’ve had to do this n it was so embarrassing. This literally makes no difference I can’t stand them

We flew Lufthansa this summer and they weighed my carry-on! I had to take things out and transfer to my purse to be under the weight and that was rough. I didn’t even have my extenders out but they only allow 8kg per bag.
