The fear of having to repeat the year alone was enough to motivate everyone to at least have the worst grade be a D😭

Repeating a grade was the best thing that academically happened to me, because I became a straight A student after that. It even set me up to finish in the top 5 of my year when graduating. It might be called ‘failing’, but really it is the opportunity to try again

That's something I never understood, like wdym america kids can't fail their year ? In frznce if you can't hit near average (8/20) you AUTOMATICALLY fail, parents don't have a word when it's this low

great plan, it won't get through with the parents though. They will literally DEMAND that you let them pass.

if we were allowed to skip grades for being more advanced than our peers, why can’t we send kids back a couple grades?

if they all fail a class then no one does failing a class only carry consequences in the eyes of a student if the majority of their peers go forward

in italy you can be failed even at elementary school. is a teacher council decision and parents have no position in this. it is very uncommon in elementary and middle school but very common in high school.

Studies have shown that holding elementary level kids back affects social-emotional growth and learning heavily with less impact educationally. High school, however, they can see their friends whenever and should be held back.

I've seen so many teachers saying that parents are a huge part of the problem now. Like, they give kids a warning for not delivering the expected work in class and parents will complain to the school that "the teachers are overwhelming their kids with work"?

its honestly so close to needing a general high school entrance exam with BASIC COMPETENCIES where you can’t enter high school if you don’t pass it

Former teacher here. It's all the fault of no child left behind. Worst thing to happen to America. Funding is tied to passing rates and test scores, holding kids back= less funding

Yeah, because the whole point of going to school is to learn, why are people so afraid of learning? Demonizing maths or physics, there’s nothing wrong with knowing a little bit of the world

Don´t want to sound like a boomer but once laptops entered every classroom kids instantly started falling behind. Writing things down really helps soooooo much more than typing. Also parents being stupid and/or not knowing the language their kids are being educated in doesn´t help.

i'll tell you why as someone with an inside look at schools: money. seriously. money. the way the US school financial systems work is schools are paid on factors: 1) how many kids they teach. 2) how well they perform overall. and 3) how well they perform on the BIG STATE TEST. this system means any students who fail cost the school money. but the education budget is already cut down thanks to *certain* big names, so schools can neither afford to help students falling behind, nor afford to let them fail. so they go with the best answer available: fudge the numbers. inflating grades is not uncommon, even if its just enough that they dont bomb out. teachers are actively told to make the content easier and to not fail kids because it looks bad on the school. it's a broken system insentivising earning money to keep itself going over producing well learned kids.
