@catherine_thegrace: I used to think sitting down with my parents would fix everything. It didn’t. Now I know: heal yourself first. The Toxic Mom Recovery Guide shows you how—even if she never changes #emotionallyimmaturemom #narcissisticmom #healfromyourmom #toxicmomrecovery #toxicmomrecoveryguide
When people talk about this new “trend” of cutting your parents off - I just want to show them all of these instances where we pathetically beg them to talk it out with us, for YEARS.

100% this is what I said to my parents right off the rip. We can’t heal together. Until we have healed individually

I say this all the time. You gotta work on you first.

Did mediation, the counselor mediator was not prepared for my psychologist MIL tactics and it all made it worse. Had to go as no contact as possible for my own mental health

Causing pregnant and postpartum women so much emotional pain is cruel. People should be extra kind and soft during this time. ❤️

My experience with family therapy was similarly unproductive. Not worth it!

One of the most difficult things about narcissistic parents- they don’t and won’t seek therapy. Because narcissists don’t think they have or *are* the problem. So the only resolution is no contact for self preservation. Something I’ve learned after FIVE years of therapy!!!!!!!!

Oh man, what a wild story! I’m so glad you and your daughter were ok! I also want to thank you for sharing this story; before going NC with my mom, I considered suggesting family therapy with her. I know she would have acted the same way your parents did, though, and it never would have worked

My mom called my therapist a teeny bopper. Dr Davis has a PhD.

The problem with solo therapy is they will say everything that is wrong with you but for a therapist to offer help they need to heal about the abuse. How is a therapist to help a parent of an adult child if they go to therapy and hear my kid won't talk to me. My kids was a difficult child. The therapist needs to know that the difficult child actually had colic and was labelled bad for the rest of their life and the arguing was about being beat and neglected. They have to know that the child left because nothing they said mattered.

The biggest shock, after I’d been to therapy, started healing and having healthier boundaries, was that if people in your family or community aren’t also doing their work, then you just move further away from them, not closer. You’re no longer speaking the same language or working from the same place and it makes interacting worse.

This is why I never felt it would be helpful, if you don’t do the work individually, I just feel like there will be more deflection, denial and gaslighting

I have been searching for peace for 30 years. I’m 52 now. I what I mean when I say peace is that I can detach from their narcissism and not send me into a depression spiral anytime I have contact with them. 30 years of therapy. I’m so sick of it.

All family therapy ever resulted in was me being blamed, dog piked on, forced to “forgive” unforgivable acts when no attempt at accountability was made, and being forced to carry their emotions while having none of my own allowed. And the therapist just let it all happen. Never again.

Completely agree. My parents have forced me to go to therapy in two weeks time. But until my father gets his own help it’s pointless because of his pride.

Hard agree, toxic people must be willing to put in the work to become better people, before any mending of relationships can happen

I tried this and they bailed. I was eight months pregnant because I didn’t give them enough time. They were so shocked and Kurt when I didn’t tell them when I gave birth they caused me severe drama and hurt and pain during my whole pregnancy. They were super offended when I didn’t announce the birth of my child. Two years later they still have not met my child. We tried mediation on Zoom after my child was born. They paddle back and never took accountability. Never wanted to do. Therapy never wanted to do anything to help our relationship girl.

walking away wad my only option, or I would have seriously harmed myself. Only 2 days before I had planed to end things I got into a therapist office and it turned my life around. I had tried family therapy when I was still a teen, with my mom and I told her "If you dont change im afraid we will end up like you and grandma" who she had been nc with for the past 8 years or so. and now here we are... 5 years of no contact. and I will never have her in my life again. I wont visit her when she is dying, I wont attened her funeral becausr she is no one to me at this point
