there is nuance to all things but what ends up happening is that when rescues are too selective or just ghost applicants, it pushes people to backyard breeders. In January of 2025 I adopted a dog through a shelter that I knew had some peer reactivity. she was also incredibly dog friendly and my only dog. at the time I worked with a rescue and I explained to them that I was looking for a friend for her but giving her personality the best fit would be a confident male dog. instead, I was given a resource guarder minimal supports to work with that and then fired from fostering when he resource guarded in a different foster home and blamed for everything I applied to two different rescues again my only request. male, confident personality- under 50# I'm a homeowner Veterinary receptionist with multiple references an 8 foot fence. All three of my cats were up to date on vaccines and flea and treatment despite being indoors as was the dog. I was ghosted by one rescue, told my application was approved and then no contact for weeks and the other one denied me because cats and dogs cannot get along. I also worked with a vet who was once denied because she was her own dogs DVM.....

My Bentley just passed over the rainbow bridge on Friday. I would love to foster until I ready to rescue one for our family. Where does one start? What are the requirements to foster?

I absolutely believe in rescues facilitating the best match, but I also have seen a veterinary clinic manager denied for not having a fence, not because it wasn’t a match.

What’s your opinion on fences being required? Especially for a dog that isn’t really a flight risk….

We were denied because we don’t have a fence but we go on multiple walks a day and do training daily. We also live on 5 acres…

Yes!! My friend was fostering an Aussie puppy, the girl who applied for the puppy I worked with her. My friend reached out to me realizing I worked with the girl. My coworker got vetted through me about her living situation. In the application she said the dog was going to a home with a yard but I know my coworker just bought a townhome that didn’t have a yard. She also was suppose to do a meet and greet with her family dogs but mentioned her parents were out of town and the dogs were boarded. My friend relayed the info to the rescue that her home wasn’t a good fit and she canceled the meet/greet. My coworker was so upset about the denied application that she texted my friend how she was entitled to that dog and she didn’t deserve to just cancel on her because she grew up with Aussie mix rescues. (She works 12 hours!) anyway she didn’t find out it was me, but I did the right thing for the Aussie puppy and she went to a farm!

Question. How do you feel about a GP taking Prozac due to obsessive behavior? My dog was given this due to him really being obsessive about things but I'm not sure if I want to give it to him.

Emotional support dogs, and therapy dogs are two very different Things. emotional support animals are basically just regular pets.❤️I hope she finds the best home!🥰

Our local shelter requires you to bring your kids and dogs in to meet the dog you’re interested in before you can adopt and I LOVED that requirement. We had a seamless adoption through them. We later on tried to adopt through a different rescue who does not allow prior meet and greets, I was definitely nervous at the time for that kind of adoption but attempted anyways and that dog did NOT get along with my resident dogs at all. The rescue actually refunded our adoption fee and took her back because we all agreed it was more than an initial adjustment period, she truly was not comfortable in our home and my dogs were not comfortable with her for whatever reason. They ended up working with us to find another dog they had available that seemed to be a much more likely fit with ours (we have field labs, the puppy they had was a GSP) and she’s been a dream fit for us. And the other puppy found a perfect home for her as well, we just weren’t her match

I am very thankful for rescues that do great screenings! I worked with a very poor rescue that did zero screaming was not upfront with the dogs, health or behavior and as a first time pet owner, it was the worst fit and we both failed owner and dog. I then had the opportunity to work with an amazing rescue and match me with two of the very, very best dogsso trust the process they know what they’re doing to set everybody up for success, including the animal, especially the animal.

I really love this. I rescued my dog a year and a half ago and we made sure to get a dog that fit our lifestyle and he is the best thing for our family. Too many people get dogs that don’t fit their lifestyle and then have to get rehomed.

This is so true. This is how dogs end up in the shelter in the first place. You get super excited about the dog than get overstimulated and dump the dog on the street or take it back to a shelter. You are doing an amazing job by being thorough about who adopts your foster dogs.👏🏿👏🏿

I applied for a dog and the rescue recommended a different dog and he is a perfect fit for us. I did see that the other dog got adopted too so it all worked out.

The rescue we went through would deny for certain pups/people combos as well but weren’t ridiculous like some stories I hear. Like our girl would NOT do well with children, as ESA, or in any place with much noise. We wouldn’t do well with a high energy pup 🤷‍♀️

I do think rescues should also interview people or ask for in depth answers because I wanted to foster a husky who was on the euthanasia list I filed out the application it asked me if I had cats I said yes because we have outdoor barn cats in catios outside and the only options were yes or no . no place for me to explain and I was denied for having cats .I have a husky/malamute with a high prey drive who cant be around cats and if they would've let me explain maybe they would've approved me 🤷🏻‍♀️they ended up posting the dogs a few more times no luck the dog probably got euthanized

Well... Why be denied over no back yard? No back yard does not mean not exercised. In my experience... Apartment dogs are actually more exercised than most dogs who have a back yard.

I got denied because I live in an apartment. They told me that huskies can’t live in apartments, which honestly doesn’t make much sense to me.

Find the right rescue. The rescues I foster for are amazing and interview and the faster gets the last say upon meeting the adopter.

I turned down 3 people for my first foster dog and I’m so glad I did. His forever family is absolutely perfect!! The others just didn’t feel right to me and I would’ve rather had him longer than send him to the wrong family.
