@drwilloughjenkins: I’m a child psychiatrist, and here’s what the research actually shows. A study of adolescents found that even well-meaning conversations from parents about weight or healthy eating were linked to higher rates of disordered eating behaviors in their teens. (Berge et al., JAMA Pediatrics, 2013) This isn’t about walking on eggshells. It’s about taking any comment on shape or size off the table completely, not softening it. Build healthy habits into how the whole family already lives: cook and eat together, move together, sleep on a real schedule. Skip the commentary on any one body in the room, including your own. Share this with someone who spends a lot of time around your teen’s body right now, a coach, a grandparent, another parent. yes and no. when your son is very overweight and crying in his room about it bc he is being called cheese puff, teaching him the skills to a healthier lifestyle is absolutely good for mental health.

Honestly I tell my kids that eating healthy and being fit is important. “All food is good food” is far more toxic than actually teaching them proper nutrition and that healthy choices matter and will benefit them long term 🤷🏼♀️
