An Arab nationalist and socialist, he founded the Free Officers Movement to overthrow the monarchy of Idris I. Under his rule, Libya became the wealthiest nation in North Africa, boasting high standards of living, education, healthcare, economic prosperity, and infrastructure. Tragically, Muammar Gaddafi was killed on October 20, 2011, by Libyan opposition forces during the Battle of Sirte.
