when I was a child they genuinely did make me take this test. I just ended up telling them I didn't see anything beyond the ink on the page, and they somehow didn't diagnose my autism right then and there

They aren't very reliable for actually understanding most people, but they (and other projective tests) can be helpful at catching people who are legitimately in psychosis, in active schizophrenia, etc

I think the reason it's popular is because it's extremely narratively useful. You can hold up something that is completely meaningless to the audience, and you did as an excuse to divulge some information about your character's mindset, and the perceived medical legitimacy of the test allows the audience to accept that information. It's almost as useful of a narrative device as amnesia, or multiple personalities, which are also psychological phenomena that don't work how media portrays them.

Nowadays those aren't really used to "grade" people, they're more about getting people talking, and it can provide some early clues for some disorders. Nobody is saying "he saw two bears so he's crazy", they're just using it to make early observations

I have an original set of Rorschach plates. I've given up several times trying to learn the scoring. It's incredibly complicated. Assume the complexity is just more dark psychology history stuff to institutionalize marginalized people
