iirc modern country/country radio music is deliberately written bc the audience is dumber than the ones from the 80/90s. I can’t remember where I found that out.

Yup. the thing is, you can sing about the experience of living in the south or Appalachia that uses that mechanism and it still be a beautiful piece of art or just a fun lil song to stomp your feet to. There are a lot of songs that are popular because they hit on the specificity of growing up in these areas and people can connect with it. For instance, "my Tennessee mountain home" by Dolly makes me cry because I grew up in an Appalachian TN town, but the difference is, she has actual experience to draw from or "Family Tradition" by Hank Jr. or "Rocky Top" by the Osborne brothers for fuck sake. These songs all mention stereotypical things associated with country music, but they are either deeply personal, humorous or tell a story or a mixture of all three. BUT so many songs just try to hit buzz words and check boxes without having actual experience to draw from or without having anything unique to say about it. So it just sounds like you're listing generic things about growing up in the rural south instead of painting a picture of it.

I used to be a HUGE FAN, but his new music is soooooo bad. No heart behind his songs at all, I wouldn’t be surprised if he lost his passion for music a long time ago

There's lot of great modern country. Just not in the pop country genre.

Chris LeDoux is my favorite country artist. Yes he references things that would be seen as cliche, but it was a life he was actually familiar with.

Not all country is like this. There is some really good country music out there but this is the schlock that gets popular for some reason

Much here i agree with. I think we are seeing the last of the “Industry” artist, I believe the independent artist will continue to take over as the artists who are still operating in the old business model will go away. I was a music row writer for years and I remember my publisher being tough on lyrics and they didn’t except just anything I threw at them. Better is out there

Emily Ann Robert’s is making headway! Finally we’re getting some of what we lost in county music.
