Japan tax-free shopping is changing. 🇯🇵🛍️ If you're planning to shop a LOT on your next Japan trip, this is worth knowing before you go. Until October 31, 2026, eligible travelers can generally buy tax-free items directly at the tax-exclusive price in participating stores. But from November 1, 2026, Japan is switching to a refund system: you'll initially pay the tax-inclusive price, then receive the equivalent consumption tax back after customs confirms that you're taking the goods out of Japan. So the new process will basically be: 🛍️ Buy your items 💳 Pay the full price 🧳 Keep the tax-free goods with you 🛃 Complete the customs procedure before departure 💸 Receive your refund A few things are especially important: • The ¥5,000 minimum per store, per day, before tax remains. • You need to actually take the tax-free goods out of Japan. • Customs may need to see the items, so don't pack them somewhere inaccessible. • If you're checking luggage containing tax-free purchases, complete the tax-free procedure before handing over your baggage. • Food, drinks and cosmetics can now fall under the simplified system, but consuming them in Japan means they won't qualify for the refund. So tax-free shopping isn't disappearing. The process is simply becoming more like “pay first, get refunded later.” If you're planning a Japan shopping spree after November 2026, save this one. 🇯🇵 Would this new system make you shop more carefully, or would it change nothing for you? 👀 #japan #japantravel #japanshopping #japantraveltips #japantrip
