My mental health has affected me in ways that I never thought were possible, and there was a point where I genuinely felt like I couldn’t carry everything anymore. For a long time, I struggled with feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, numb and completely lost, while at the same time trying to carry on as though everything was okay. I became very good at hiding how much I was struggling from the people around me, even when I was falling apart inside. Things eventually became so overwhelming that, in September last year, I reached the darkest point I have ever experienced and came incredibly close to ending my life. At that point, I couldn’t see a way forward and I felt as though the pain I was experiencing was never going to change. I felt trapped inside my own thoughts, and the things that normally mattered to me no longer seemed important because I was simply trying to get through each day. It is difficult to put into words just how frightening that period of my life was, because I was fighting a battle that very few people could see. I felt like I was a burden, like nobody could truly understand what was happening inside my head, and I struggled to believe that things could ever become better. Reaching the point where I nearly ended my life made me realise just how seriously my mental health had deteriorated. Looking back now, it scares me to think about how close I came to losing my life when, at the time, I couldn’t imagine having a future worth staying for. Since then, I have had to slowly learn that struggling with my mental health does not make me weak, difficult or a burden, and that asking for help is not something I should ever feel ashamed of. Recovery has not been a straight line, and there have still been days where things feel incredibly difficult, but I am still here, and that means something. I have survived one of the darkest periods of my life, and although September will always be a difficult reminder of how low I once became, it is also a reminder that I made it through a moment I genuinely thought I wouldn’t. I am learning to take things one day at a time, to be more honest about how I feel, and to recognise that my life has value even on the day
