Meanwhile, local families struggle economically and federal disaster relief aid continues to fall far short of what the region needs to rebuild. Federal disaster aid to North Carolina has reportedly totaled only around $7.8 billion of the more than $25 billion the state has requested since Helene devastated the region nearly two years ago. Asheville suffered severe flooding and residents went without power or running water for more than a month.
