I think there is a much bigger social phenomenon happening here that people don’t want to acknowledge. Lindsay fits a very familiar image: a white, middle-class mother with a regular job, a family, and the appearance of an ordinary life. For some people, that makes it emotionally difficult to accept that someone who looks like them could also be capable of something horrific. And that’s where projection comes in. Some people seem to be projecting their own experiences, fears, and ideas about motherhood onto Lindsay, while desperately searching for another villain who makes the story easier to accept. The uncomfortable reality is that women are not automatically incapable of committing horrific acts simply because they are mothers, white, attractive, or appear ordinary. Women are human beings, and human beings are capable of both good and terrible things. Lindsay doesn’t become innocent because she fits the image of the kind of woman people instinctively want to protect. And Patrick doesn’t become guilty because people need someone else to blame. At some point, we have to stop protecting the image we want Lindsay to represent and start looking at the evidence of what actually happened.
