People don't understand, a lot people with autism functions off rewards and routines. His dad didn't hug him because his behavior is not routine and cannot be rewarded. They are trying to redirect his agitation but he is really just overwhelmed by sudden changes in his routine.

the way your husband so calmly stood there, i knew your son was probably trying to manipulate the situation ...dad held his ground. that's a strong man to stay calm like that. because we know if he got upset the whole cycle starts over again.

As a mom of an adult daughter with autism ADHD ocd and a chromosome disorder I completely understand you my daughter has some bad days and it can be frustrating but setting boundaries is necessary and you guys are doing amazing

As a support worker for people with autism and learning disabilities, I know that stance from dad. And I know in that moment it’s killing him to not give Lane a hug.. but he has to be firm and strong and let Lane know that some behaviours are not acceptable. Great job dad!

I’ve worked in this field for almost 30 years, starting as a DSP and now serving as a Director of Nursing. Dad isn’t being cold or withholding love—he’s calmly staying present while allowing Lane time and space to regulate. His son is clearly still escalated, and his parents have a lifetime of experience knowing what helps him and what may prolong the behavior. I commend you for the patience, consistency, and love you show in handling these difficult moments.
