While dragging its stuck right-front wheel through the soil east of "Home Plate" in the Columbia Hills, Spirit churned up a trench nickname "Gertrude Weise." The exposed patch contained nearly pure silica—the primary component of opal. On Earth, concentrated silica forms in environments like volcanic hot springs or steaming fumaroles.
