@econchrisclarke: Will the new Venezuelan/US oil deal lower gas prices? Unlikely. At most we are seeing an increase of 1-2M barrels when the Hormuz deficit is closer to 10mbd. Also, does this now make Trump out most socialist president ever? #economy #economics #gas #prices #capitalism

Not a fan of Trump, but forcing the corporations to give back to US bank and taxpayers is fantastic.

If our government truly wanted to invest to bring down fuel prices, invest in a few closed refineries. Declare a national emergency, bring a few refineries back online to offset all of the refined fuels that are being exported. Supply and Demand, this would create wealth going to the government (tax payers) and put people to work.

We will either become socialist or libertarian. Unfortunately, the incentive seem to be more towards socialism.

My biggest concern is will this be the new norm? Did Trump just set a precedent that the US government is going to be actively involved in all ventures.

I have a related question. If the government (or government employee) creates a new product and the rights are given to a corporation to make, why doesn’t the government get a portion of the profits? Shit, we could eliminate taxes.

as a side I do think that nationalizing railroads and selling access to the railways to train transportation company is something we should do.

Your oil production numbers also assume global production is spread evenly. The 10 million gap is likely much smaller for the United States. The arrangement gives U.S. interests a much greater role in producing, controlling, marketing and purchasing Venezuelan crude.

With Trump is always about how he can enrich himself. He pretends that he is doing it for someone else benefit but it ends up only benefiting Trump. (See Trump’s charities)

The government owning scarce natural resources is Georgist, to be specific. But owning *foreign* natural resources is colonialism, too, so… 😬

I think energy independence is a myth because crude product prices aren’t determined by US supply but the world’s demand. The oil and gas companies don’t work for us. If they can make more money selling it abroad, they will charge us more for what’s left. To be truly energy independent we would have to be able to supply the entire world’s needs. Isn’t a realistic possibility

Business leader pleasing government entities, hmmm, sounds an awful lot like a private firm curry favor for a government contract. But again what do I know.

Which is going to have the larger impact on gas prices? Is it oil production or oil refinement? I was under the impression that since the war in the Ukraine plus Iram conflict, we have seen a significant drop in global refining capability.

The 65 million barrels is hugely overstated, the U.S. will fund the development of a foreign company over years before we'd see any oil or money. This is another siphoning of money to Trump allies.

Far right political movements historically haven’t had many problems getting involved in the private sector. Usually the benefits go to politically connected people, and openly at that.

Except it's not socialist to own OTHER NATIONS means of production. Venezuelan workers are cut off completely from their means of production in that case. This is closer to fascism.
