@drdeborahparenting: Your child says no. You followed the system: you kept the instruction in place, and now they argue, hide, or keep refusing instead of doing what was asked. That's when many parents start repeating themselves, negotiating again, or move on to the next thing. Now refusal becomes the way the task gets skipped. Here's what to do instead. Keep the original instruction the same: "You can do it, or I will help you." If they keep refusing, return them to the task and help them begin the first physical step. If they yell, kick, or scream while you are helping them, keep the instruction in place and continue helping them through the task until it is finished. Then move into the next part of the day. Do this for cleanup, getting dressed, brushing teeth, leaving the house, and other required tasks. You decide what needs to happen. Your child chooses whether to do it independently or with your help. The task stays in place until it is finished.
