I was out of work for nearly two years as a result of long covid. I “lied”. I listed that i was taking care of a sick family member. Which is technically true its just i was that family member.

I did this. Now I’m a care coordinator in a community health clinic. So now I get to help others with a variety of issues and talk about my central line, my CGM, my feeding tube, and more. Taking my pain and giving it a purpose

So I think it’s one thing to list if it’s long covid — something everyone understands and experienced together and knows exists. Short term cancer treatment same thing. If you have something less socially understood, I think I skew towards hiding it in “consultant work” especially if it’s ongoing.

I totally agree about not wanting an employer that would discriminate against me for being disabled. I lost my last job due to my chronic illness and was unemployed before finding my current one. When the recruiter called to screen me, I told them about my illness and needs and asked them to tell me about how the job would work with my needs. Then in the interview I was asked about the gap and told them about it too. Now I have a very supportive team and a job that has helped me continue to recover

This likely only worked because you had a social media account that is getting views, which can be seen as a skill. Most people don’t have this.

there was a recent study that eliminating dates improves resumes more than listing them even when there are no gaps

Do you have tips for a situation like mine? I never took official medical leave and I’m still enrolled in university but can’t finish it. I’m in my 10th year of a 3 year course. I’m about to turn 34 with no work experience at all (besides server jobs). I have narcolepsy and suspected mecfs but I feel like I fall through the cracks. It took so long to get diagnosed, I’ve been to so many doctors but I’m still not taken serious enough. With my meds I’m functional enough to appear normal but I can’t concentrate and have maybe 2-3 good hours a day. But they’re not guaranteed and every day is a gamble. One of my biggest problems is that I can’t do mornings. I get up at 11. I do dog sitting via rover and I’m very good at it but I don’t know how I could “break into the field” when I can’t concentrate and can’t guarantee to be at school at a certain time. I also can’t do evening school because I’m exhausted at night. It’s so hard. I’d appreciate your take on this

This is actually so helpful to hear! Taking medical leave is something so complex and these are the real issues we face when we want to return. Thank you for sharing!

How long were you out of work? I feel like I have been out for a while and time just keeps passing and I keep getting more stressed but at the same time my health is my priority

I’m currently looking and interviewing and I was also thinking I’d go against advice and just be honest. I refuse to work for a company that wasn’t understanding.

I love this! I had an experience recently where I was applying for jobs and had a job gap on my resume. I wasn’t how to handle it, I ended up not including it as it was the last 6 months. In the interview, I got a question about it and was honest, luckily they were understanding ( helps the directors are experienced nurses) however, I decided I wanted to be upfront and I will likely need to take some time off due to health appointments so I wanted to be upfront.

Stretch out the years you were in each job before you - I add years to the jobs that help me get the new job and decrease or delete the jobs that aren’t relevant

I welcome your idea and I can see if these skills I obtained until now could build a section, yet it just could be hidden behind my official work times, because I am just ill and notnout of job luckily. (yet)
