MASSIVE 7.8 EARTHQUAKE SHAKES PHILIPPINES SCHOOL ON FIRST DAY OF CLASSES. A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore Sarangani, Philippines, at about 7:37 a.m. on June 8, 2026, sending students and teachers at Colon National High School in Maasim into panic during their opening-day activities. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed the quake occurred about 32 kilometres from Maasim. Students reportedly screamed, fainted and rushed to safety as buildings shook. Teachers and police officers helped evacuate students, while emergency responders were deployed to assess the situation. Despite the terrifying scenes at the school, no serious injuries or casualties were initially reported there. Four students were later recognised for helping rescue fellow students and teachers who became trapped in the school's gymnasium. The wider earthquake, however, caused significant destruction across affected areas. PHIVOLCS recorded destructive shaking and tsunami waves, with waves of approximately one metre reported along parts of the coast. According to the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development's latest situation report, 1,661,828 people in 661 barangays had been affected, while 138,563 houses were damaged, including 19,320 completely destroyed and 119,243 partially damaged. More than 105,000 people remained displaced as of August 21. The disaster triggered extensive emergency and relief operations across several regions of the Philippines. #Philippines #Earthquake #Magnitude78 #Sarangani #Maasim
